Celebrity Authors: Yay or Nay?

Hello everyone. So this morning I found out that Kim Kardashian is getting a book deal. My immediate reaction was one of disdain. How is it someone like Kim Kardashian gets a book deal when hundreds of writers are struggling everyday to make it big? It’s just so unfair. And the crazy thing is that Kim won’t be writing the book. She’ll hire a ghost writer. Kim won’t go through the wonderful and at times maddening process of writing a book. But she’ll sell a bunch of copies. Probably even become a best-selling author.

Now I know I sound bitter and jealous, but I can assure you I’m not. What really grinds my gears is that other more deserving people aren’t getting their time to shine because publishers are paying Kim Kardashian an advance to “write” a thinly-veiled fictional story of her life. Of course, Kim isn’t the first celebrity author. Snooki (aka Nicole Polizzi) has “written” four books. Lauren Conrad has published eight novels. Even Hillary Duff has “written” a trilogy of novels. Now I have nothing against celebrities who write their memoirs. Most of the time, they have an interesting story to tell. But if they want to be taken seriously as an author, why hire a ghostwriter? Why not attempt the process themselves? Their desire to hire a ghostwriter proves that writing is nothing more than another stone in their empire. They don’t care about nurturing a story or seeing it grow. They just want one more thing with their name on it. It’s sad and I hope this trend changes really soon.

So what do you guys think? Should we buy into the whole celebrity author craze?
