Dec/Jan NaNoWriMo 2014 Day 1: New Adult Fiction

Hey everyone!

So I completed Day 1 of the unofficial December/January 2014 NaNoWriMo. If you have been following my blog, you know that I was unable to participate in the official November NaNoWriMo due to school commitments. Now that school is over and I finished outlining my novel, I have decided to do my own NaNoWriMo for 30 days between December and January. Just like the official competition, I will attempt to write 1,667 words a day for thirty days, working towards the ultimate goal of 50,000 words.

So without further ado, here is my Day 1 update:

Word Count Goal: 1,667

Words Written: 2,333

Yes that’s right! I wrote 666 words over the goal! I consider that quite an accomplishment considering everything I had to do day. Between chores and work, I only had a short time period to write.

I don’t want to give away too much about my novel, but it’s a New Adult, coming of age story set in the world of baseball. The New Adult genre is a relatively new invention. Back in 2009, St. Martin’s Press requested YA manuscripts that could be published for adults. Most protagonists in New Adult novels are between the ages of 18-21, give or take a year. Unlike YA, New Adult novels primarily focus on mature themes like starting a career, leaving home and discovering sexuality. The genre became super popular thanks to self-published authors such as Colleen Hoover.

Speaking of Colleen Hoover, you should really checked out her novel Slammed. I am halfway through it and absolutely love it. Give New Adult novels a try. I know there is a stigma out there that they are over-sexed versions of YA novels, but that’s untrue. There are some really well-written and compelling New Adult fiction out there.

You can learn more about the New Adult genre here, and Colleen Hoover here.

Check back here tomorrow for my Day 2 update!
