It’s Day 8 of my Dec/Jan NaNoWriMo adventure and here are my stats:
Word Count Goal: 15,003
Words Written: 17,661
Yay! So I am more than 2,000 words ahead, which is good considering I will not get the chance to write on Saturday because I will be out of state for the entire day. I’ve been trying to get ahead all week so I don’t fall too far behind.
Today’s topic I want to talk about is slaying your dragons. No, I don’t mean real dragons (although that would be really cool), but rather the metaphorical dragons, or problems in your story. I’ve learned the hard way that we cannot hesitate to kill our darlings, or delete/edit passages of our story that we are in love with. The same thing goes for the problems in our story. I like to stick to an outline when I write. However, sometimes what you have planned does not necessarily work on the page. Characters and plot take on a life of their own and you cannot stifle your creativity. So you need to slay those dragons, or the obstacles that are in your way. Don’t be afraid. Have no mercy when it comes to changing your story around. Sometimes, it’s for the better.
So until next time, kill your darlings, slay your dragons, and keep on writing!
