Dec/Jan NaNoWrioMo 2014/15 Day 13: Literary Influences

Hey guys! So today I wrote 1, 778 words. Not bad. Not amazing either, but still not bad. I didn’t write that much today because I am in the midst of studying for the Praxis II exam, so most of my free time is spent doing that. So without further ado here are my stats:

Word Count Goal: 25,005

Words Written: 26,605

Today’s topic revolves around literary influences. When you are writing, is there a book or author that influences your story? There are several books and films that have influenced my current project including Field of Dreams, which is based off the novel Shoeless Joe by W.P Kinsella, Top Gun, Anna and the French Kiss and a variety of other books and films. Actually, I find that I am constantly being influenced by things I watch and read. Even though I have outlined my story, I still change things during the writing process. It’s great to read a book, see how an author tackled a certain topic, and then figure out how you are going to approach the same situation in your novel. That’s why I think it is important to read as much as possible. Having a huge breadth of literary knowledge allows you to be more creative and daring with your own writing.

What influences you? Do you find that the books you read and the movies you watch somehow find their way into your work? Let me know in the comments.

Until next time, kill your darlings, slay your dragons and keep writing!
