Dec/Jan NaNoWriMo 2014/15 Day 20: Outline and Story Structure Part 5

Hey guys! So it’s day 20 of my unofficial NaNoWriMo adventure and I am nearly at the 40 K work threshold! So excited. Anyway, here are my stats:

Word Count Goal: 36,674

Words Written: 39,422

As with every post, I am going to continue going through the 3 Act, 9 Block, 27 Chapter Story Structure I am using for my novel. Check out Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4.

So for the second block of Act 2 we dive into the meat of the story. Things are getting more complicated for our protagonist. We can’t make their journey too easy after all.

Build Up: So in this part of the story we start setting in motion what will be the midpoint or the major turning point of the story. The whole point of the build up is to prepare the protagonist for an event that will change the trajectory of their journey and ultimately motivate them to take matters into their own hands.

Midpoint: While the midpoint is not quite the climax of the story, it is a major turning point for the emotional journey of the character. They encounter something that changes their whole perspective on their situation and empowers them to change the course of events. In The Hunger Games, it is when Rue dies. Katniss decides that she is no longer going to let the Capitol win. It motivates her to play the game she wants to play and empowers her to spark a revolution.

Reversal: From this point on, Katniss is changed. Her love for Rue and respect for her passing, gets some of the districts of Panem behind her, prompting the Capitol to see her as a threat and prompting Katniss to get revenge on them.

And that my friends, is the second block of Act 2. In tomorrow’s update, I will cover the final block of Act 2 then we will plunge right on into Act 3.
