Hey guys! Today I wrote 1,931 words. It was another good session. Working on some character development. I am trying to avoid making my novel cliche, which is actually rather difficult. It’s only a first draft, so it doesn’t have to be perfect. Here are my stats:
Word Count Goal: 40,008
Words Written: 43,602
Today, I am going to break down the first block of Act 3 in the 3 Act, 9 Block, 27 Chapter Story Structure Outline. You can view my previous posts here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6.
So the first block in Act 3 feature these three plot points: Trials, Pinch, Darkest Moment
Trials: Now that your hero is dedicated to the task and the journey, they need to endure a series of trials before they could succeed. A great example of this is in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The Triwizard Tournament features three tasks that function as trials that Harry has to endure. With each challenge, Harry is tested. By the time he reaches the Maze in the end, Harry needs to pull out all the stops in order to survive.
Pinch: The pinch is another plot twist that plunges the hero deeper into his journey. Using the Goblet of Fire example again, I would say that the pinch is when Harry and Cedric both win the final challenge. This of course leads to the next plot point.
Darkest Moment: In Goblet of Fire, the darkest moment in the book is when Cedric dies. Harry is devastated and doesn’t know how he is going to recover from the situation. However, he does pull himself together so he can temporarily defeat Voldemort. This is the first time Harry realizes the true cost of being Voldemort’s enemy.
We are almost at the end of the story. Two more blocks left of Act 3.
Until tomorrow, kill your darlings, slay your dragons and keep writing.
