Dec/Jan NaNoWriMo 2014/15 Day 23: Outline and Story Structure Part 8

Hey guys! I’m back. So I took a few days off because I was studying for the Praxis II exam. I took it on Saturday and I am pretty sure I passed. So now I can write again. Yipee! So I only wrote 1,425 words but I am getting back into the swing of things. Even though school is starting in a few days, I will continue to write regularly. Here are my stats:

Word Count Goal: 41,675

Words Written: 45,027

I am going to break down the second block of Act 3. You can view my previous seven posts here: (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7).

So the three story points in the second block of Act 3 are Power Within, Action and Converge. Like many other plot points, these can be combined.

Power Within: After The Darkest Moment, the hero is struggling to get his or her life back on track. Although they may have other people helping them, they need to find the strength within themselves to go on. In Star Wars, this is when Luke is destroying the Death Star. Rather than listen to his scanner, Luke follows his instinct and ends up succeeding where others failed.

Action: After the hero finds the power within himself, he takes action to change his world. Like I mentioned before, it is when Luke destroys the Death Star in Star Wars.

Converge: This is when all of the different story points come together: the main plot, the subplot, the conflict, etc. It adds tension to the story and heightens the steaks for things to come.

Tomorrow, I will go through the final block of Act 3.

Until then, kill your darlings, slay your dragons and keep writing.

  2. Thank you so much for breaking all that down. I saw your youtube video on the outline and loved it, but was lost on several parts. Your blogs cleared all that up for me.
    Thank you,
