So it begins. Camp NaNoWriMo. The time of year when those masochistic creatures they call writers sit in front of their laptops (or notebooks) and attempt to write a novel. Some ambitious souls set the bar at 50,000 words. Others, like me, take it easier on themselves and aim for 15 or 20k words. The numbers may be different, but the goal is the same: to give birth to a story.
Yesterday was the first day of July and, simultaneously, the first day of Camp NaNoWriMo. I set my goal for the month at 20k words and wrote a whopping total of…409 words. Okay, so, it wasn’t a great start. Actually, it was probably one of the worst starts I’ve ever had to a NaNoWriMo. But the fact remains that I wrote some words. Sure, they aren’t great words, but they exist and I am now 409 words closer to finishing my novel. And that is my primary goal for this summer.
See, I have been writing this novel since November 2018. Progress was slow during the year due to work obligations, but now that I have more free time, I am planning on completing the first draft. I am hoping that participating in Camp NaNoWriMo will help me achieve that goal faster.
So what am I writing?
I don’t want to give away too much about my story, but I am writing a contemporary Women’s Fiction novel that chronicles the struggle of a woman trying to find success in a male dominated field. Vague, I know, but I want to keep things under wraps for now.
This is a narrative that I have been kicking around in my head for years and I feel as though the time is finally right to share this story with the world. But, before I can get it on bookshelves, I need to get the damn thing done!
So, in addition to writing my novel everyday, I am going to be blogging about my Camp NaNoWriMo journey. Writing can be a very solitary pursuit and I would really like to share my experience with others writers.
Anyway, it’s going to be a fun and tedious month, but I know that, come August 1st, all the pain and suffering will be worth it!
Oh, before I go, I want to leave you with a song from my writing playlist. Here is “Blue Bayou,” by Linda Ronstadt. Enjoy!
Until tomorrow, kill your darlings, slay your dragons, and keep writing!
